Brief project introduction:
My project’s name is ‘The Last Letter: The Unfinished Story’. It is telling a broken love story of mine. The basic format of the script is a letter to my ex-boyfriend and it firstly talks about how our story began, then illustrates plenty of sweet memories of us, but the story has to stop as we broke up lastly. And I am settling and healing myself with relief and thankfulness, as well as the best wishes to him at the end.
Project rationale:
In this project, the class activity of writing story draft script we did in class previously actually helped a lot in the whole production process. It provided me a clear framework when I had to edit the final version. And I tried to draw the storyboard before I started editing, it also helped me to sort out what exact imagery I want for that particular sentence in my script.
Comparing the draft and the final story, I kept most of the images I used in the draft one but I changed the music for the final one. In the final story, I have chosen two soundtracks actually and trimmed them into one and I have tried my best to make the connection sounds more natural and smooth.
The first soundtrack is more sweet and storytelling-like, so it is mainly for me to describe the happy moments in our relationship, while the second one would be more sentimental and blue, it starts from the script of ‘because you’re gone’, and it is changing to a broken-hearted mood. So, this is actually the set of the ‘key moment’ in my story as there is an emotional twist in me when talking about breaking up issue.
For the choices of images, there are quite a lot of explicit images, for example, the café and the cup of coffee were shown. Also, I used photos and videos of me and my ex-boyfriend to depict all the sweet moments we had before. I have chosen a topic of love for my story, so I have also put more efforts on showing the implicit images to represent love and other different feelings like sadness, ‘empty’, ‘lonely’, ‘being healed’ etc. For example, I used rainy footage to represent ‘feel so empty’ after my ex-boyfriend left; the candle is being blown out in the very last scene to represent our relationship is completely over etc.
In short, the project is interesting to me as this is my first time to edit one video all on my own, and I realize media could be really closely connected to our daily life and personal feelings!

I come up with this story because I think that it is a very significant part of my life that I want to record it down. I think that many people can relate to my story because everyone have their own fear, and especially our fear as a kid are usually very similar. As what happened really changes my living attitude and my perspectives towards things, I want to share it with more people, to inspire them, or to encourage them if they are in the middle of something difficult in their life.
At first, it is very difficult to write the script because I need to picture the story so as to attract the audiences, but you need to remember the details in order to picture the story. Therefore, in the process of producing the video, I keep recalling my memories, which is like teaching myself a second lesson, to remind myself what I learn from the past and not to forget it.
Rationale
At the beginning, I decided to use iMovie in MacBook to produce the video, so I start by searching some legal images and clips online, but I later found that many of the sites are not free, and I can’t find exactly the image that I want on those free sites. Therefore, I turn to use Powtoon, which I have experience on using it. The last time I use Powtoon, I create a cartoon video by using the template inside, but this time I discovered that it is quite useful in creating a real look video too. I can just search the clip inside the software by typing in the key words, and click on the one that I want, the clip will be automatically added into the video. In my opinion, the images and clips in Powtoon have a higher quality than those online, and it is easier to have a consistent style throughout the whole video.

This digital storytelling project shows a true story of my life. The story is based on a most critical moment in my life that significantly affected my present personality, perception, and identity. It goes through from the moment when I decided to study abroad to the present time where I am a university student. The story highly focuses on my honest thoughts and emotions regarding the important decision I made in my life and its outcome. This story also conveys a lesson or a message to the peer audience that may support and embrace the vulnerability perceived by the over competitive society that we are living in in this generation.
I am confident that my message I shared in this story is not like a common message we hear many times in today’s world about becoming successful and having ambition.
RATIONALE
This story begins with an explanation of how my life was in the past, before encountering a significant change in life. The story starts to develop from the moment where I made a critical decision in my life, which was to study abroad in Canada. Then, the story explains how my life had changed after the decision, and sheds light on my inner thoughts and emotions. The story also talks about the change in personality along the change in environment. As the story focuses on my personal feelings, thoughts and emotions, it naturally leads into sharing the new perception I formed about success in life.
Through sharing this story, I aimed to convey an encouraging message to my peers. Today we live in an overly competitive society where the majority of people try to go beyond their limits for success and people expect the others to do the same if they want to live a successful life. I believe a successful life is not about suffocating oneself to go beyond the limits, but it is about following happiness no matter it might not be the successful life that the world defines and wants. Individuals are all different, in a sense of having different strengths and weaks. I was motivated to let the peers know that following the “success” defined by others, society, or the world, will not always guarantee the life they want, but rather, it is important to follow your own voice that contents you that may lead into a successful life.

I use PR for editing the video and download the stock video clips from pexel.com. For the background music, I mainly download the free soundtracks from audionautix.com. I record the narration parts with my iphone and I think the quality is acceptable. In order to cultivate a more intimate atmosphere, I add the video clips and photos of my real competitions.
Rationale:
The moments that I have experienced in debate team are really precious for me. I grew a lot when I started to play the competition. Thanks to the tense training, I become a more courageous and more resilient person. And the failure of that competition influenced me thoroughly and I couldn’t forget the frustration that hit me so hard. Therefore, when I wrote the script and chose the video clips, the memories popped up in my brain and I just wanted to say ‘’thank you’’ to the girl who didn’t give up. This is definitely a treasurable chance for me to review my life.

This is a story about having a pet at home Therefore I was reluctant to the idea at first because I thought it would just cause more troubles to me and my families. . I anticipated many damage and destruction from the mischievous dog like biting the furniture ,Destroy the sofa, and pee on your bed. And eventually, with the relentless negotiation and the promise from the domestic helper to take care of the dog, I agree on it reluctantly. Surprisingly, my dog who was named Uni blended into my family really well. she became a part of the family members rather than just a pet. I originally thought having a pet is the worst decision our family had ever made, but given the laughter and tears she brought, it turns out to be the best.
From this story, I became a more open-minded man towards new thoughts and ideas. I was told that when you are facing a dilemma, just don’t panic and you will eventually cross that bridge when one comes to it.

I constructed my video into two parts: the first part is my reluctancy towards having a pet and the second part is about the pleasure and happiness of having the little Shiba. The two parts should demonstrate different feelings and emotions, so I have used 2 different background music for different parts. The story is about the friendship between me and my best friend in the past. The story begins when I found that one of my photos is being torn apart. The photograph of me and my best friend reminds me of the memory and the story of us. Me and her were best friend three years ago, spending numerous enjoyably time together. She was always here in my every remarkable moment in my life and I thought we can be friends forever. However, we grew up a lot and got into different university, then a lot of argument happened between us. We cannot be as close as before and our friendship cannot last after all. I was so persistent to find her back, but I didn’t succeed. After I found that the torn photo, I realize and understand that we have grown up, and I should move on to my own life.
Rationale:
I used the photograph that we took together to symbolize our friendship. It is an implicit image. I used to believe that our friendship is just like photograph which can be kept forever. Therefore, when she is not friend with me anymore, I was so dwell on the past and keep on wondering why time changes so fast. However, when I found out that the photo is being torn apart, I finally realize that we have grown up and we are not who we used to be already, just like the photograph itself.
I added a lot of clips to describe our memorable moments before to symbolize that I am so dwell on the past, before I saw that photo. I added clips of studying for DSE examination in order to make audience relate to my story.
In the scripts, I intentionally added words like “I remember” to symbolize how I tried to repair our friendship and to emphasize how much I care about our relationship. I added the sentence: “I believe all of us have that one old friend in the past.” To make the audience reflect and relate to my story.
As for the music, it is a song in music box edition. I think that this song has a lot of emotion in it and it fits my story so much as my story is kind of sad.

My video shows the most intimate story of myself – my dream of being a professional conductor. My dream was slightly different from others as I discovered it at a very young age, and my whole life has been striving for it. My path towards my dreams and goals is a roller coaster, and sometimes it affects my attitude towards my future career. After experiencing some up-side-downs of pursuing my goal, I found that a professional conductor or musician is one if the most insecure career paths of all sectors, and I think this would be a good topic to be illustrated through this video project, as it consists lots of self-emotions, as well as a lot of messages that would be great to share in this video.
The construction of the story of this digital storytelling video was based on the timeline on how I pursue my dream. However, as suggested in the lecture, I carefully paid attention on how to present my story in an interesting and simple way. This is my first time doing video editing as well as digital storytelling, so at first it took me sometime to analyze how to identify different moments in my story. My key moment of the story is my major failure on a conducting competition, and how this competition changes me into a better person as well as giving me further insights towards my career path and life. I chose to end this video in a darker way, on one hand to show my own feelings of my less positive future, on the other hand, telling the audience how dangerous a musician career can be.
As this is a very close and intimate story to myself, it took me sometime, also, to interview myself. I asked myself during every part of the story: “How did I feel?” and “How can I illustrate my feelings and contents to my audience so that they can understand it easily?”.
